Royston BernardASHMEADE"Roy" died December 26th 2021 at Gloucester Royal Hospital at age 89. Finally Roy has joined Doreen, his beloved life partner of 64 years. They will be remembered by many fellow adventurers, campers, hikers and skiers for their love of life, and their joyful company as knowledgeable travelling companions. Roy was the youngest of his 7 brothers and sisters born in Cheltenham to Harry and Edith Ashmeade. His childhood was spent in Dartford, Kent where he developed his love of exploring and cycling. As a competitive member of the Dartford Wheelers he became a cycle technician, then Roy became an RAF mechanic. After his RAF service he moved to work at Smith's Industries, until his early retirement at age 58. Together Doreen and Roy skied abroad 42 times, from 1981 until his last ski run in 2008 at age 76. They camped and caravanned in multiple countries. Roy hiked the Cotswold Way 11 times leading various walking groups. Roy is survived by his two sons Ian and Robert and daughter Christine, their partners, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. His legacy of his love of the great outdoors is alive and strong in all his offspring. Uncle Roy will be sadly missed by his many nephews and nieces. He was a frequent participant in community social events in Glebe Farm Court, his teasing, Blondie music and cream cakes will be missed by his neighbours. A private family ceremony, followed by a larger Celebration of Life will be planned where restrictions allow. Should you be inclined, donations supporting cancer patients, to Maggie's Cheltenham, in Roy's honour are much appreciated.
