KennethBARNES(Toronto, Canada) Ken remained stoic to the end, courageously facing many health challenges with quiet determination and went to sleep in the early hours of February 14, 2022, at Scarborough General Hospital at the age of 87. He'll be remembered for his quick wit, unmatched math skills and a bone crushing handshake that children hid from. That, and his fondness for Stoke City Football Club, a Wright's Pie and a good pint in a local pub (or a rum and coke, whatever was closer). Born September 30, 1934, in Meir, Staffordshire, England, to Frederick and Elizabeth (Whitehurst) Barnes, he is predeceased by his brother Frederick (Phyllis). After emigrating to Toronto, Canada in 1956 he sent a ticket back for his sweetheart, Sheila (Ayres). They were married shortly after her arrival on December 22, 1956. Ken remained a faithful husband and great provider for 65 years, a devoted father to Stephanie (Steve Brooks), but his greatest pride was grandson Jordan (Chantel). A dear "Uncle Ken" to many nieces, nephews, and friends, he consistently provided guidance, friendship, and unconditional love (and a handshake to be dodged). "T'ra duck." We thank our extended family (especially niece Diane and husband Kevin who demonstrated incredible love and support through their regular outreach and visits despite being "across the pond") as well as close friends (you know who you are) who stayed connected and showed deep concern for Ken and Sheila during these challenging years. Your active interest and kind deeds meant more than you'll ever know, to all of us, but especially to Ken. Cremation has taken place. A virtual memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 2:00 pm. Please email the family for Zoom credentials or to share condolences: stephbrooks1987@gmail.com
