David Bassett was a broadcasting genius who brought to Plymouth a style of radio that we had never heard before. 'Phone Forum' was the first of its kind in the south west. Anyone from Brenda in Plympton to John from Mutley could call in and talk about any subject they liked. David took a call from me in 1981 when I was about 14 years old to talk about a military coup in Spain, where I'd just been on holiday. He was genuinely interested in news from everywhere in the world. He had an analytical and clear-thinking mind and was able to process information and convey compelling stories to his listeners. His loud gruff voice was also a welcoming one. He coached my school friend Andrew Knight who had won a competition to be the first voice on Plymouth Sound on its opening day in 1975. David inspired me to follow a career in broadcasting and I will always be grateful to him for that.

A truly inspirational man who when he was Programme Controller at Plymouth Sound gave me my first opportunity to work on Radio which lead to many years hosting the Breakfast Show. I used to see him every morning when he would always come into the studio and comment on the programme giving me guidance where necessary. Little did I know that one day I would have that job and I hope I had the same effect on my team as he did on us.
One of Radio's Greats sadly missed.
