Sorry to hear that Mr. Bastin passed away.

He taught me maths for five years from 1984-1989.

He was a great teacher, strict but secretly lovely!

He had a hidden great sense of humour.

I once took a bet he offered on picking a picture card from a pack, rolling over a four on a dice and flipping a head on a coin toss.

The next lesson Mr. Bastin arrived with the items, confident the odds were on his side.

Of course, I hit lucky and won the bet!

I was immediately offered a selection of rulers instead of cash payment, but insisted on the latter!

A teacher I'll always remember, and I hope he rests in peace.

I was at Kingdown from 1987 to 1994 and for the first 5 years, had the pleasure of being taught by Mr Bastin. He was strict, blunt (very blunt at times!)... and, without doubt, the best teacher I ever had. Certainly the one I remember the most. A brilliant communicator and educator. My good luck that I was in his class for such a long period.
Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

So sorry to hear the sad news. Phil was Head of Department at Kingdown when I started as a newly qualified teacher in 1980. His teaching style, calm and disciplined approach and his wonderful support was an inspiration and helped to make me into the teacher I am today.
Best wishes
