BENJAMIN POOLERemembering Royal Marine Benjamin Poole who died during a gruelling training exercise in the Brecon Beacons in Mid Wales on 28 July, 2008.Marine Poole, 26, a signaller with the elite unit, was taking part in selection tests for the SAS and SBS when he collapsed. He had been carrying a 55lb pack during an 18-mile yomp through the mountains on what was the hottest day of the year. Temperatures reached 27c and it was feared he might have died from heat exhaustion. He was reported missing after failing to reach a checkpoint. An Army search team found him collapsed after tracking down his personal location device.A military source told the Daily Mail: "Everyone is absolutely gutted about Benjy's death. He was a good solid guy. I believe he had served in Afghanistan."Signall er Poole had already qualified for the lesser role of a special forces communicator and was based at Hamworthy Barracks in Poole, Dorset. He had been hoping to get selected for the Special Boat Service.

Ben was the most wonderful son a parent could wish for. He was kind, sensitive, had a lovely sense of humour and adored his brothers. At the same time Ben always set himself testing objectives and was a determined character. We will miss him so, so much and know that he will be angry with himself for not completing his course. A higher power has determined that Ben must complete this elsewhere.
Ben was so proud to be a Royal Marine and to have served with the people and units that he worked with during his tours of duty. We as a family greatly appreciate the friendship and support that so many of his colleagues have given us.
My love for my dear son will be eternal. The grief is deep but the pride is overwhelming. One day dear Ben we'll raise a pint together again. Dad
