We have fond memories of Don - we were friends through his late wife, Nicola (with whom I used to work and who was godmother to our twins). Don was gentle, witty and knowledgeable and walks with him were revelatory in relation to archaeology - we were privileged to know him. So sorry that we’ve learned of his death only now in The Guardian. Happy memories and sending our love and thoughts to his daughters and their families.

Our dear friend Don’s contributions to the advancement of archaeology were truly immense. Our personal involvement with him as a friend was even greater. We wish you a long and painless rest and send all our love. God bless from Denise and Gareth Dowdell
