BOB MOUNTFORDFormer Port Vale striker Bob Mountford died in Australia on 26 August, 2008, at the age of 56, following a lengthy battle against cancer.
He progressed through the junior ranks at Vale Park, signing as a professional in February 1970 before making his full debut in August 1971.
The footballer made 78 starts for Vale, scoring 11 goals, before being sold to Rochdale for £2,000 in December 1974.
He also took in spells with Huddersfield, Halifax Town, Crewe and Stockport before making a new life in Australia, where he played for Newcastle United, of Australia, and also had spells with Brisbane City, Blacktown, Newcastle Breakers and Azzuri.
His manager at Vale was Gordon Lee, who said: "Bob was a promising young player and I had high hopes for him.
"He had all the ingredients of being a good player. He had a good shape, was mobile and good in the air and had a good shot. He was a good athlete and looked a player.
"Bob was a local lad who wanted to succeed and I thought he would do well."
Former Vale playing colleague Brian Horton, now assistant manager with Hull City, described him as "a smashing lad who was always willing to listen and learn."
Another former team-mate and now Vale chief scout, Ray Williams, said: "Bob was a member of a bygone era when Vale had a lot of local lads. Port Vale was our club. He had an ideal build for a professional footballer and striker."
Mr Mountford’s cancer had been in remission and he was working in the Australian prison service until two weeks before his death. He was survived by his wife, Jane, and two children, Paul and Anna.

I met Bob when he played for Halifax Town.We often trained together, shared many laughs and mutual respect.I lost touch when I moved from the area but tracked him down in Australia where I phoned him.His response was typical of Bobs sense of humour,"...great to hear-it's only been 20 years".It was in Halifax where he met Jane, they made a great couple so it is with great sadness that I learned of his untimely passing. My condolences to all his family, some of whom I met at his parents home in Brown Edge.

I played briefly with Bob at The Vale in 1969, and remember him as a very likeable, decent and kind person. In later years, when he was in Australia and I a parish priest in Staffordshire, we resumed contact through a relative of his (Aunt Kath?) who was then a parishioner of mine. I was sad to hear of his early death. Tony R

I played with Bob at Rochdale during the mid seventies and he in fact took place as striker before I moved on .
He was always very fit, a consumate professional always offering to assist other teammates.
He was excellent in the air and as brave as they come.
His and my mate in Newcastle Dave Jones confirmed that he fought long and hard throughout the last 12 years with no complaints which is typical of Bob.
My deepest sympathies go out to his wife and family.

I'm a Rochdale fan and remember the excitement when we signed this big bustling forward with a huge Afro. He went on to score two goals on his debut and scored many more goals, including one at Norwich in the FA Cup to get us a memorable draw.

My condolences go to his wife and family. I will never forget the man with the Afro who played for the Dale.

As a young fan during the time that Bob played for Port Vale, it was wonderful to see so many local lads in the team. And their names stick in the memory because they were part of the community. May peace and God's love be with Bob's family in Australia.
