Phyllis Helen JoyBRISTOWIt with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Phyllis Helen Joy Bristow at the age of 106 years. Phyllis passed away peacefully at her home in the company of friends. Phyllis was pre-deceased by her loving husband Harry Corby in 1976, and son Stephen in 2020. Left to celebrate her life are her sister Pat, daughter Rosemary, and son Charles, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren all of whom will miss her very much. Born in Richmond, Surrey to parents Eva and Dudley Hill, Phyllis grew up, along with her two brothers and sister, in County Durham where they all spent many happy years. After leaving school Phyllis went on to train as a kindergarten teacher for a few years until War broke out in 1939. During those years she became a Red Cross Nurse serving at a Medical Post in Kent, eventually taking her State Registration. Later in 1945 She was reunited with her then fiancé Harry who miraculously returned from three and a half years as a POW in Japan. They married and went on to have 3 children and in 1955 moved to Guildford where she lived ever since. Phyllis became actively involved in the Parish of Merrow where she was a key particpant in establishing the weekly coffee morning which continues to this day. Into her late 80's she was still driving and "picking up the oldies" to get them to the church hall on time! A Thanksgiving Service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church in Merrow (222 Epsom Road) on Tuesday May 30th 2023 at 1.00pm In lieu of flowers it was our Mum's wish that any donations may be made to The Church of England Children's Society.
