It may seem rather strange that someone should write a tribute 12 years too late but I only met Davydd once in 1976/7 and never met him again after that. I’m not sure if he told me or his friends that he was Davy’s the D or that’s how it sounded to my poorly trained English ears. I think the meeting place was at Aberystwyth University at an NUS Area Conference. I think I was invited to annoy the NUS who were quite fairly considered national chauvinists. I had a need to get a train back on a Sunday but none were available on a Sunday from the local station.
Davydd heard of my predicament and offered to drive me to a station that was open. He said he could borrow the Student Union Car. And we arranged to meet later when he turned up with this car. I got in and we set off, and one stage 2 members of the SU tried to persuade him to return the car but he suddenly accelerated and left them behind. I apologise for not remembering which station we were aiming for but he took by surprise when he turned off the metalled road and left it via a wild track. He assured me that crossing the Green Desert was the quickest route. On the journey we discussed his FWA days and the fact he had gone to prison. He talked of an action that led to the trial but not in detail he clearly felt a great injustice. The journey was interesting for scenery and for what he taught me about the Green Desert and the Free Wales Movement. Rest in Power Davydd the D
