CALUM MACDONALDFormer journalist Calum Macdonald died from cancer on 7 October, 2008, aged 31.During his 10-year newspaper career Mr Macdonald worked for three major Glasgow daily titles - the Evening Times, the Daily Record and finally The Herald.Mr Macdonald left journalism in 2007 to go back to university to retrain as a lawyer, but was fondly remembered by colleagues on his former papers.Allan Lane, assistant news editor of The Herald, described him as a "great reporter and a fine fellow who had everything ahead of him."A graduate of Aberdeen University, Mr Macdonald had spent four years at The Herald, which he joined from the Daily Record.A former colleague at the Record said he "would be sadly missed by his former colleagues and his many friends in journalism."Another added: “Calum was an extremely popular member of the Record staff, where his intelligence and sharp wit were well appreciated.“He was a great reporter, very good at rolling up his sleeves and exposing the baddies. He was tenacious when he took an interest in a project and you wouldn't wish him to be making enquiries about your dodgy dealings.”Mr Macdonald had married his long-term partner in a civil partnership ceremony the week before his death.
