The obituary notice of Barrie CARLESS

I have just seen this notice of the passing of Barrie Carless, also of Bramdean school closing. Barrie was my history and sports teacher from 1969-1974 and I have remembered him as an inspiration to succeed. I played in his football, rugby and cricket teams at Bramdean and we did not lose too many games under his coaching. I remember his Citroen DS estate taking us to away matches. I recall in my last year at Bramdean we would have gone to London for a tourist visit, but the IRA had been active in the city and so we went to Cardiff. We passed a ball around on the hallowed turf of Cardiff Arms Park, visited Barry Island and stopped our coach in a terraced street on the way back for Mr. Carless to pop in and say hello to his Mum. In the 1980's I went back to Bramdean and it was Mr. Carless who greeted me and showed me around the school at lunch time. I have often thought of him over the years. RIP and my condolences to the family.

A sad day hearing about the passing of Barrie. He taught me for 9 years during the seventies at Bramdean. I look back very fondly remembering his (not so much) fun quizzes in History but mostly for what he gave me with regards to team sports of which he was a huge advocate.... I was never a great sportsman but Barrie always encouraged me to participate and thanks to this I have enjoyed many years of sports.
But mostly I have to thank him for introducing me to Skiing ... for many years I was part of Barrie’s ski family and have skied ever since.
Thank you Barrie ... you will always be very fondly remembered!

We met Barrie and Sara about ten years ago and went skiing with on 2 very enjoyable holidays. They always made me and my son incredibly welcome, and we have amazing memories of these trips. Barrie always had the ability to make everyone he met feel very special and important, which is the lasting memory that we will all have of him. He will be sadly missed by us all, and our thoughts and prayers are with Sara and the family at this very sad time. All our love, Ian Karen Daniel Larah Liam and Alfie Foster

I was taught by Barrie some time in the mid to late 90's for a short while. He was a very memorable man, very keen with his Sports and History. Quite a firm teacher but it just came across as passionate, and everyone respected him. I've often wondered over the years how he was doing, and I'm happy to see that he lived a long, full life. By the looks of the other comments, he has left lasting impressions on those he taught even in the 70's! I think his family can be very proud of that. What a great man.

A lovely man who was respected by everyone and it is very sad news to hear of Barrie's passing so soon after the school closing, truly the end of a unique eerier. I was taught by Barrie from 1979 to 1990 who was rugby mad and never gave up on trying to turn a footballer into a rugby player. Even during the football season the whistle would blow and we would have to pick the football up and play rugby !!!! Since leaving school I have often thought of Barrie, especially when the six nations is or the boat race is on the television. Thank you Barrie for everything you did for me and so many other boys. RIP

This is very sad news, Barry taught me History and Sports at Bramdean between 1973-79 and was one of the best teachers and people you could meet. He gave up so much of his time so we could go to Austria Skiing and was always interested in what you were doing with your life. I know his family will be proud of his achievements and he will never be forgotten.
