John SydneyCARROn the 14th of September, John Sydney Carr, former star player of Blackheath and Cliftonville hockey clubs, left the field of play for the last time.

John made his first appearance at Mile End hospital in East London, born to parents Ron and Annie. While attending Tulse Hill School, he was poached by Blackheath Hockey Club's in-house talent scout, rising to captain the 3rd XI and to the position of club vice president. After a move to Cliftonville Hockey Club for an undisclosed transfer fee, he continued to excel on and off the field.

He will remembered as a loving family man, and alongside his unwavering commitment to grassroots hockey, he was also a keen gardener, amateur artist and had a passion for machines, whether they flew or ran on rails.

John will be deeply missed by Carol, his wife of more than 50 years, by his brother, Alan, his children, Ian and Andrea, his grandchildren, Archie, Cass and Lola, as well as by his daughter in law, Bernie, his son in law, Jon and his many friends.

Funeral service to take place on Friday 20th October at Thanet Crematorium, 12.15pm all enquiries c/o Gore Brothers Ltd, Westgate 01843 835836
