Frances MaudCASTWOODOn 22nd December, Mrs Frances (Fran) Castwood, a long time resident of Westgate celebrated her 107th birthday with friends and relations at Quex Barn restaurant. On 24th December, the grand old lady decided she had run out of energy and very peacefully died in her own home. The second of four sisters, Frances was born in London but moved to Maidstone in 1938 when she married Edward (Ted) Prince. Whilst Ted saw out the war in the Tank Corps via Tobruk and El Alamein, Frances endured the V1 (Buzz bomb) attacks as most of them passed over Maidstone on their deadly way to London. After the war the couple moved to Ramsgate and later ran the village store and sub post office at Thannington Without. They then moved to Farnborough, Kent but after Ted's death Fran went back to Birchington, after which she married Geoff Castwood and moved to Sidcup. After a few very happy years, Geoff died and Fran returned to her "home" area and has lived in Westgate until the present. Fran was a lovely lady who retained her lively interest in people and news. With the help of relatives, friends and carers and despite increasing frailty, her own indomitable personality meant she was able to live in her own home until the end. Her funeral will be at Margate Crematorium on Wednesday 22nd January, 2020 at 14.30 hrs. No flowers please but donations should be sent to the Royal Voluntary Service.
