The 1966 England World Cup winner and Manchester United legend has passed away at the age of 86 having carved out a career as one of the game's all-time greats.
A statement from the family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family.
"His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him. We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.”
Charlton, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2020, is regarded as one of world football's all-time greats. As well as starring in England's 1966 triumph he also scored a staggering 249 goals in 758 games for United, placing him second on both the club's all-time top scorer and all-time appearances list.
"A club statement from United said: "Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.
