RayCLEMENCEdead: Former Liverpool, Tottenham and England goalkeeper dies aged 72.
Ray Clemence, who won five league titles and three European Cups at Liverpool and played 61 times for England.
Former Liverpool, Tottenham and England goalkeeper Ray Clemence has died, aged 72.

Clemence made 61 appearances for the Three Lions between 1972 and 1983.

At club level, he won the league five times at Liverpool as well as being part of three European Cup-winning sides.

In a statement, his family said: "With great in sadness, we write to let you know that Ray Clemence passed away peacefully today, surrounded by his loving family.

"After fighting so hard, for such a long time, he’s now at peace and in no more pain.

"The family would like to say a huge thank you, for all the love and support that he’s received over the years. He was loved so much by us all and he will never be forgotten."

Clemence came through the youth ranks at Notts County before joining Scunthorpe in 1965.

He would spend two years with the Iron before leaving for Liverpool for a fee of £18,000.

Clemence would spend the next 14 years at Anfield, establishing himself as a club legend under the management of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, playing 665 times for the Reds.

He won his first league title in 1973 and would go on to claim four more while on Merseyside, as well as the 1974 FA Cup, the 1981 League Cup, UEFA Cups in 1973 and 1976 and three European Cups in 1977, 1978 and 1981.

Tottenham paid £300,000 to sign him from Liverpool in 1981, and he would go on to win a further FA Cup and UEFA Cup during a seven-year spell in north London.

In October 1987, he injured his Achilles tendon in a match at Norwich, which forced his retirement from playing the following year.

Internationally, Clemence was a regular for England between 1972, when he made his debut against Wales at Ninian Park, and 1983.

Clemence took over as Spurs boss as joint-manager with Doug Livermore in 1992 and managed fellow London club Barnet from 1994 to 1996.

He joined England as goalkeeping coach under Glenn Hoddle in 1996, a position he kept under the management of Kevin Keegan, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren.

Clemence was replaced by Italian Franco Tancredi under Fabio Capello, but remained on the backroom staff, and was reinstalled as goalkeeping coach under Roy Hodgson.

Fellow England goalkeeper Peter Shilton led the tributes, tweeting: "I’m absolutely devastated to be told of the sad news that Ray Clemence has just passed away.

"We were rivals but good friends. Ray was a brilliant goalkeeper with a terrific sense of humour. I will miss him a great deal as we’ve kept friends long after retiring. RIP my friend."
