I have only just come across the sad news of the passing of Prof Cocking. He was a true visionary, and showed me great kindness when I was his research assistant and PhD student in the late 80s. He loved to see the young scientists he supported develop and flourish and I’ll never forget how he helped and supported me. My condolences to all his family and friends. Rob Finch.

Dear Bernadette and family,

So deeply sorry to hear of Ted's passing and my sincere condolences to you all. Ted's science colleagues will have shown their appreciation for his scientific achievements, but I would like to record my boundless thanks to Ted during the times we shared when I was Secretary to Rothamsted Research and the Lawes Agricultural Trust. His counsel was always thoughtful, his suggestions wise and his friendship generous. He was someone who left a true mark for the good of science - missed by so many of us.

Dear Bernadette,
Please accept my sincere condolences. Ted and I shared many years together in the Biology School at Nottingham University. As a sufferer from kidney cancer, I am pleased to make a donation to one of his chosen charities. I am very saddened by his demise. Unfortunately, personal circumstances will prevent me from saying goodbye to him at his service in the cathedral.
With kind regards,
Peter Usherwood

Dear Bernadette & the family,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the demise of our respected teacher, supervisor & mentor, Professor Edward Cocking FRS. He was truly a gentleman & very kind person. Prof Ted was my & my late wife Stephanie’s PhD supervisor & a lifelong mentor.  I still vividly remember our meal together at a French restaurant in Nottingham on 14 June 2016
Take care
