You were so kind to me Gladys Mary, and so encouraging of my thinking about poetry and my love of it and of Carol Ann Duffy’s work especially. I am so sorry you’ve died.

Your publication of one of Duffy’s earliest collections, as well as the collections of many other poets whose voices you often heard and valued before anyone else did, means the world to us and will continue to matter to future generations of readers.

Your kindness and love for us all also leaves its mark on the world forever: ‘For there is nothing lost that may be found if sought’.

Oh I am so sorry to hear this. I met Gladys many years ago when one of her poems was the chosen text for a choral composition competition, which I won. She was delightful, and the poem was poignant, sad and beautiful. I was about to get in touch to send her a recording of the piece, as I had brought it out again for performance a couple of weeks ago - so I am especially sad to learn that I have just missed this opportunity to send it to her. I would be delighted to send it to her family if that would be any comfort - I have left my email if her family would like to get in touch.

I like to think that Mary Webb was waiting to greet, thank and lead Gladys Mary from this world to the ever-lasting peace that she richly deserved. Gladys Mary has done so much to keep the life and work of Mary Webb to the forefront of the literary world where it deserves to be. Gladys' research into the realm of Mary Webb was, right up to the close of her life, superb, and will be a permanent legacy to Gladys herself. She was at the core of the Mary Webb Society, and as members my wife and I had the great privilege of listening to Gladys give talks on Mary Webb's work on a number of occasions. Unfailingly she would deliver these in a clear, accessible, but yet intelligent way - and in a way that drew the listener in, and welcomed their contributions to the discussion. She was also very approachable and I liked her very much. A great loss to the world; God rest her generous soul. My sincere condolences to her family and to all who loved her. Colin Neville

I have known Gladys Mary since 1985 when I joined the Mary Webb Society.
I will miss her wonderful talks, her deep knowledge and understanding of Mary Webb’s works which she so willingly shared with us over many years of society events.
Gladys Mary was not only our beloved President but a very dear friend too, she will be missed so much by all our members but her huge personal contribution to the Mary Webb Society will never be forgotten.
I send my sincere condolences to her family and friends.

On behalf of The Mary Webb Society, of which Dr Gladys Mary Coles was our beloved president for many years, we offer our deepest condolences to her family. We are so shocked to hear of her sudden death; she was our guiding light, mentor and inspiration. We have so many memories of her eloquent and knowledgeable lectures, her love of Mary Webb’s Shropshire and her passion to promote the life and work of Mary Webb. We will miss her greatly.
