ValentineCONNORIn loving memory of Valentine John Connor of Rutherglen (formerly Dublin). Passed away 21 December 1953 aged 67. Irish Guards WW1. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy (nee O'Brien). A loving and loved father and grandpa.

His army record states " A good man. Has been very severely wounded in action." (at the Somme).

Despite always walking with a limp, you did heavy labouring work at the Caledonian Pottery and White's Chemical Works then was the pondkeeper at Bankhead Paddling Pond.

You wrote poetry and taught my late brother Douglas all the Irish songs.

We never met but you knew I had been born and named after your beloved wife.

Rest easy soldier. Sleep in peace. Loved ones all reunited and safely held in angels wings.

Love always, your grandaughter, Dorothy

On Christmas Eve 1953, my dad Jack registered my birth on the way home from your funeral on Christmas Eve, took me outside where we lived in Victoria Street, Rutherglen overlooking the railway to the city of Glasgow and the hills beyond, showing me to the world and the world to me.

In the final verse of one of your favourite songs Danny Boy
"I will sleep in peace,
until you come to me."

I hope you think my brother John Douglas and I Dorothy Ellen have done okay in life. We always did our best and kept the faith with our people.

Love always,
Dorothy Ellen Connor

My dad Jack Connor carried the poem you wrote for your beloved wife with him all his life and I have it now. Thank you.

"The God's today have parted us,
The fatal die is cast,
And I am left to ponder
fond memories of the past,
Sad visions come before my eyes,
I look for you in vain.
My restless brain is all afire,
My heart is crushed with pain
But God's decree has now pronounced
That we must part for life,
I think of you sweet Dorothy,
My one time loving wife,
The tide of time will leave its lines
Upon my aged brow,
But you'll live in my memory
More faithfully than now
When those I love and leave behind
No longer hear my voice,
When others take my earthly place,
Installed there by God's choice,
Valentine and Dorothy shall reunited be
In that great land beyond the vale,
From earthly sorrows free."

In loving memory of my beloved wife Dorothy O'Brien, departed this life 13th March 1938. A tribute from her loving husband Valentine
