Julie was a great contributor to the education and school funding policy debate. She generously shared her knowledge and views on education funding through her professional posts on LinkedIn and on her own blog at School Financial Success. Julie saved hundreds of school leaders’ hours of time as she distilled masses of information and highlighted what they really needed to know. Key intelligence summarised, packaged and given away for free.
I met Julie about 20 years ago when I did an Ofsted Inspection at Hartlepool Local Authority. Julie was their education and school funding expert then and she was awarded the highest grade possible. I also worked with her on the DfE national funding group where Julie always contributed in both a challenging and positive way.
What people may not know is Julie was also Juliette Lawson, her pen name for historical fiction. Her first novel the Seaton Carew Sagas series, A Borrowed Past, was published in February 2020. Julie was also a gifted editor who meticulously edited my novel Seized Deliberately earlier this year. We had numerous conversations during the process discussing what can and can’t be written. We also had a good laugh debating what is, or is not funny.
Not sure who will attempt to fill the gigantic gap left by Julie passing, or who will pick up the education and school funding knowledge baton. But it won’t be me. I now intend to retire and concentrate on writing my next book. I know Julie was well on with her second book before her illness came out of nowhere. Life really is too short….
