I recall turning up at Colins door with my 5 year old daughter all dressed up for Halloween some 6 years ago…. As I approached the door I recalled the fond memories I had attending the address as a child being a friend of Simon’s. Simon was like his dad a very warm hearted person knowledgeable and generous with his time. Simon often had us come to his home to watch a Mike Tyson boxing match or listen to Jethro Tull and Colin would often walk in as Simon was rein acting Tyson’s uppercut combo and shouting Bruno’s in trouble.
My memories of the family were always of warmth and love and they had a special way of making you feel welcome and especially Simon’s British blue cat which Simon adored.
Anyway some 25 yrs later I knocked at the door which was answered by Colin who instantly recognised my face, my daughter who’s face was beaming from the collection of goodies she had already acquired from the other neighbours then shouted “Trick or treat” Colin who was obviously unprepared for a visit firstly apologised to my daughter as he had nothing of note in the house but seeing the disappointment in her eyes said “hold on!” He disappeared only to return five minutes later with a packet of midget gems placing them in her goodie bag. My daughter’s face lit up. Colin gave his last bag of midget gems without any hesitation to please a five year old girl dressed as a pumpkin. This was Colin a man who had always given and never asked for anything in return. When Simon passed numerous persons who knew Simon remarked on the strength Colin and Denise had. Some said it was their faith and love for their Family which I agreed but I also believe Colin showed us the strength he had to deal with the tragic loss so we too could learn from him and move forward.
I will miss bumping in to you around town but will take comfort in the memories I do have Rhys
