Cdr. Charles William Obe Mscsoc RnCRICHTONIt is with great sadness we announce the death at home, surrounded by his family, of Charles Crichton on 25th November 2022 aged 80. Dear husband of Delia, loving father of Louise, James, Alexandra and Katherine, doting Granda of Imogen and Toby, and father-in-law to Robin and Patrice. Charles spent 37 years in active service in the Royal Navy and 10 years more in naval uniform as a retired officer civil servant. He was an accomplished musician and proud former Drum Major of The City of Plymouth Pipe Band. A committed participant, patron and ambassador of several youth and veterans organisations involved in supporting city-based projects he was also the go-to man for matters of the maritime history of Plymouth. His wealth of knowledge and stories will be greatly missed. With grateful thanks for the care and dedication of everyone at Derriford Hospital and the local health care services, enabling Charles to continue enjoying a full life despite 15 years of living with cancer. Memorial Service at St. Andrew's Minster Church, Royal Parade, Plymouth at 2pm on Friday 6th January 2023. Donations in lieu of flowers if desired for Cancer Research UK., Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre or SSAFA may be made by retiring collection or via the website www.morrisbros.co.uk

Charles was a wonderful and inspiring “grandad” type figure.

I met Charles at the South Yard Naval Base Museum while I was detached from my SM training group awaiting my 1st drafting.

Over the years I kept in touch (2004-2009) frequently speaking to Charles in and around the dockyard in his duties or when he was with the pipe band.

If only every one in life showed the same character the world would be a much nicer place.

Thank for taking the time to share your career and offer advice in the years I knew you in the yard.

Charles made my frequent’business’ trips on behalf of English Heritage such a joy - more of a holiday than work. I was going to get in touch again but sadly missed him by 20 months. Tempus fugit, but happy memories remain. Robert Law

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Charles in Devonport Dockyard on the Naval Heritage Museum development work. He was always a gentleman - courteous, kind, attentive and with such integrity. Not forgetting of course his mischievous warm sense of humour. So many people have benefitted from his generosity of spirit and public service. I lit a prayer candle today for Charles' family because I cannot attend the special service for him at St Andrew's Church. Rest in peace Charles. You touched our hearts and lives with your humility, dedication and kindness.
