Mum was always a dog lover from an early age.
We moved to Wales from Lancashire when I was 10 because she wanted an affordable place with some land where she could breed dogs.
Mum became a respected breeder with her Tracelyn line of german shepherd dogs. She went to dog shows all over the country, her dogs did well in the show ring, and she made a lot of friends in the pedigree dog business. I remember going to dog shows with her sometimes when I was a teenager.
She had a waiting list for her puppies and sold some in Bermuda, US and other countries.
I moved to the US in in 1982, so from then on I saw her once or twice a year at Christmas and on vacation. My Mum loved to travel, and loved animals. She came to visit me in Massachusetts several times and we went on package holidays together to see Kenya twice, Tanzania, India and Uganda, and many of the photos I have of her were from these holidays.
When my mother came to visit me I would pick her up at Boston Logan airport.
One time she came to visit, she had to change planes in New York JFK. But there was a big storm and the flight from New York to Boston was cancelled. Then she had to take a taxi in the pouring rain to Grand Central station and take a long train journey to Boston through Connecticut and Rhode Island.
A couple of days later we went to Ruby Tuesdays and met some friends from my studio. My friends have a great memory of being entertained as my mother recounted her adventures by train, plane and automobile. After some glasses of wine, she had everyone laughing.
My friend Janine said "Your Mom's smile, her laughter and humor will always be a great memory"; "I truly went home with my ribs hurting from laughing so hard".
She will always be in my heart.
