I had the pleasure of working with Fred during my time living in Suffolk and as a Woodland Officer, I had the privilege of him supporting me on a number of site visits to the ancient woodlands of Cambridgeshire. Always very passionate about wildlife and nature conservation and ahead of his time with woodland management and the role that trees and woodland offered society. Every day spent with Fred was always fun and I was undoubtedly much wiser at the end of the day.
Sincere condolences to Fred’s family.

Fred and I had shared a deep interest in forests and their conservation. I learnt so much from him about forest management and how we could improve forests for wildlife. Fred was inspirational - deeply knowledgeable, totally committed to conservation, always thinking about how to make things happen. He had great foresight and was in the vanguard of implementing ideas that are commonplace today. I worked with him on the Woodland Bird Group that he founded and chaired. I made many field visits with Fred but the most memorable was the two weeks we spent together in Siberia in 2005 in the vast forests and bogs of the southern taiga. In recent years we managed to meet occasionally with Fred and Muriel, either in Suffolk or Cornwall. It was wonderful to see the fine habitat that Fred created at Chapel Carn Brea Farm. Fred achieved so much and was a great friend.
