DAVID CRISPRemembering music teacher David Crisp, who died in tragic circumstances at his home in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 20 January, 2009.The 54-year-old teacher, composer and conductor, originally from Derby, and then West Lothian, ran a business in the city which is north of Bangkok.Family, friends and his former music students hailed him as an "inspirational and talented" man.Philip Welsby, a long-standing member of the Open Orchestra and a close friend of Mr Crisp, paid tribute to him.He said: "There was a great deal of affection for David from everyone who knew him."He was a quiet sort of chap although, once he got up in front of an orchestra, he became a great wit."He kept in touch when he left in 2006 and he seemed to be living the dream in Thailand."Deb in Chiang Mai told The Times: "Your inspired energy has touched my life as well as many. I will never forget the enthusiasm, life and heart, you made every day! Aloha David."Former pupil, Carolyn Wilson, said: "David was a wonderful teacher, friend and soulmate to me. I was so fortunate to have been taught by him and to go on to teach as a result."The joy my pupils and orchestra bring when they perform is a credit to him."

I have only just found out about Mr Crisp's passing and was truly shocked. I played the trumpet in the School Band and at Lasswade Community Orchestra under Mr Crisp. I remember going every year to Coldingham with the Orchestra, with David composing St Abb's symphony and playing a concert in the church hall on the Sunday. It was the highlight of the school year for me, and through his teaching I joined McTaggarts Scotts Silver works band for a while.

He was a great character, knew just how to cheer people up and although I never saw him after I left school in 1986 he was always remembered as a favourite teacher.

He will be sorely missed.

David was my teacher, friend and soulmate. Today thanks to him I have an Honours Degree in Music and am about to start an MA in Music, specialising in the left brain/ right brain aspects of learning a musical instrument. Today thanks to him I am employed in East Lothian to teach in 6 schools. Today thanks to him I stand before an orchestra of 40 school pupils ranging from Primary 5 to 6th year and beyond, knowing that before I can ask them to play a note the most important thing I must do is make them smile. Today thanks to him I can listen to a cd and arrange the music for my orchestra (many people laugh because I've only just got this computer so all my arrangements are hand written). Today thanks to him I am the best instrumental instructor I could ever be.
Thankyou for the lessons, thankyou for the nights out, thankyou for the holidays. Your presence is forever with me.

David was a long tie (30 years) friend. He was one of my closest friends and I was with him in Chaing Mai a week before his death. He was truly an inspiration to me and a rock in my life. The feelings of emptiness I now have cannot be described. I am numb but I have so many happy memories of him including the four days I spent with him from 10th January. A kind man, a generous man, a witty man.

My thoughts are with Andy his brother but, Andy, you should know that when we were in Chiang Mai in January he was truly happy and at peace with the world. I have a photo he asked me to take of him at a temple should you want a copy.
