As a young pupil nurse, I spent the theatre spell of my training working in the eye theatre of the DRI in 1979. The three surgeons then were Mr Coates, Mr Fielding and Mr Davies. I was a keen student and interested in ophthalmics,
which was just as well because Mr Davies liked to grill his scrub nurses on their eye knowledge. I always had the answers. Then one day he asked me to take out a patients corneal sutures. The whole theatre went deadly quiet as I proceeded to do as he’d asked. Afterwards I was told that no one, not even Sister, was ever allowed to take out corneal sutures. I never forgot that day, or Mr Davies’s act of supreme trust. It’s taken me all these years to look him up and find out that he passed away two years ago. Thank you for that very happy memory Mr Davies.
