Terence Anthony Gordon Davis (Terry), the West Midlands Labour MP and Secretary General of the Council of Europe, passed away peacefully aged 86 after a short illness on 9th December 2024.
Terry was born in Stourbridge, West Midlands, to Gladys (nee Avery), a secretary, and Gordon Davis, who worked in insurance. He attended King Edward VI grammar school, Stourbridge, studied Law at University College London and Business Studies at the University of Michigan (USA).
Terry was elected MP for Bromsgrove (1971-74), Birmingham Stechford (1979-1982) and then Birmingham Hodge Hill (1983-2004).
He was popular as a Birmingham MP because he understood the problems of the area and worked tirelessly to help constituents. Terry was cheerful, approachable and kind. At Westminster he served on high-profile committees, including the Public Accounts Committee, and won a reputation as a serious-minded and conscientious MP.
Terry was made a member of the Privy Council in 1999 and a Companion of The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in 2010.
Terry will be missed by his wife Anne, his daughter Katherine and son-in-law Peter, his son John and daughter-in-law Jessica, grandsons Joe and Adam and sister Joy.
The funeral service is at St Thomas' Church, Market Street, Stourbridge at 11am on Friday 24th January 2025, followed by a private burial service.
