Every time I left my mum and dad, he would shake my hand and always say “take care son” and would wave until I was out of sight leaving his house.
I said my goodbyes to you at the hospital and I know you heard every word. Now we must say our goodbye and wave to you. I hope you are with your mother, brother and sisters and I hope to see your happy face again.

On behalf of us all, we are so lucky and proud to have you as a husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend. Your legacy will live on in all of us and we will make sure your kindness and knowledge bring light to people we meet.

Goodbye dad, you are and will always be my hero and friend, I love you.

My Dad

The earliest memories I have of my dad are sitting on top of his broad shoulders carrying me through Liverpool City Centre. I now know how hard that is as I did the same for my children Mia and Roman, but my dad seemed to carry me all day.
Then one day in March 1980 I came down the stairs to see my mum upset and being comforted by Brian and Peggy. He thankfully survived at what at that time was the worst oil rig disaster, the Norwegian Alexander Kielland. It was even in the Guinness Book of records but not an achievement he would have wished for. There was 200 men onboard including my dad and 123 unfortunately lost their lives. Therefore, he was a hero to me from the start. He even went to every funeral in the UK and offered advice and comfort to those involved. He went to work and risked his life daily to provide for his family.
His generosity and kindness will stand out not only to me but everyone he met. From helping his kids, neighbours, friends and relatives with any jobs around the house. There was no job too big for him. He even built an extension in the old house that today I still have the scars for when I fell headfirst into the footings he had dug.

But the biggest achievement was not just the amazing work he did, but the love he gave the family. He loved his kids and grandkids and was proud of them all. His thoughtfulness stands out at my nan and grandads 50th wedding anniversary when he flew home from working in Holland with 50 Golden roses, small touches that he would carry on through my childhood and adulthood. Christmases we were spoilt as children, asking for something and getting even more. Even up until last year he would go out and personally buy “stocking fillers” for me Tracey and Paul. But they were always with thought, a torch because I travelled abroad, a wine stopper because Francesca I like wine.
