EstherRANTZENTV presenter Dame Esther Rantzen has died at the age of 86. The journalist and broadcaster, known for shows such as That’s Life!, in recent years became a prominent voice in the fight to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales.
She was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2023. In May of the same year, she announced that her condition had reached stage four.
Dame Esther hosted BBC consumer affairs show That’s Life! for 21 years from 1973 to 1994. The show was a ratings hit and became one of the most popular programmes on British television, expanding the traditional role of the consumer programme.
It also led her to set up Childline in 1986 to provide counselling services for young people. She later launched The Silver Line in 2012, which aims to tackle loneliness in older people.
The broadcaster leaves behind her three children, Miriam, Rebecca and Joshua, whom she shared with husband Desmond Wilcox.
Our thoughts are with Dame Esther's family and friends at this sad time. We invite you to pay tribute to Esther below.
