DENNIS HERODDennis Herod, the last surviving member of the Stoke City team of 1947, who came close to winning the league title, died at the age of 86 on 16 December, 2009.His death came just three weeks after he lost his wife Joyce.Herod, who lived at Wrinehill, played in goal more than 200 times for Stoke between 1946 and 1953.He hit the headlines in February 1952 when, after breaking his arm in the days before substitutes, he went and played on the wing... and scored a goal in a famous 3-2 win against Aston Villa! In 1953 he moved to Stockport County for a season before retiring.Denis Smith, who got to know Herod in his later years, said: "I was at his wife's funeral only the other week and it's very sad to hear that Dennis has died as well now."He was a nice gentleman, somebody from a bygone age."With losing Alan A'Court as well, this has been a sad week for Stoke City."
