DONALD PICKERINGDonald Pickering, who died on 19 December, 2009, was a respected British actor who worked prolifically on television and the stage.His best known TV appearances include three different Doctor Who serials and a spell playing Dr Watson opposite Geoffrey Whitehead’s Sherlock Holmes. In Doctor Who he played Eyesen in The Keys to Marinus (1964) opposite William Hartnell, and was Captain Blade in The Faceless Ones (1967 - Patrick Troughton). He was also Beyus in Time and the Rani in 1987 with Sylvester McCoy in the lead role.He also featured regularly in The Pallisers (1974, based on the Anthony Trollope novels) and the BBC’s Play of the Month strand. He appeared in gentlemanly roles in the comedies Yes, Prime Minister (1986) and The Brittas Empire (1997).His various film parts included Doctor at Large (1957), Carry on Admiral (1957), Battle of the Bulge (1965), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Thirty Nine Steps (1978) and Zulu Dawn (1979).In 1990 he played Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd in the ITV drama-documentary on the IRA pub bombings, Who Bombed Birmingham?
