It was with great sadness that we learned of Robert’s passing. We first met Bob when we travelled to Loughborough in the early ‘90s to look at an arrangement for our Aviation Management grads at Georgian College in Ontario, Canada to enter into the M.Sc Airport Planning program. Bob was instrumental in making this happen, and we returned to Loughborough a few years after and spent a wonderful year in “L’boro” at LUT. We fondly remember social occasions with our then 6 year old daughter, Leah with Bob, Anna, and Emma in their heritage home in Normanton-on-Soar. We had stayed in touch via Christmas cards over the years. He will be missed by many, a wonderful mentor, teacher, and person.
Our condolences to Anna, Emma, and family.

Bob Caves – star man!

Bob was kind, caring, engaging and extremely clever. He loved his family and had a passion for aviation – a field in which he worked in various forms all his life. I had the privilege of being his colleague at Loughborough University where we taught alongside one another in this country and over seas. The students used to say – ask Bob the time and he will tell you how to make a watch – so thorough were some of his answers. He loved the planes and he loved the people. His work on runway over-runs and his thinking around all patters airports was unrivalled and a privilege to be around. He encouraged and supported me in the early stages of my career and we encouraged one another with the various challenges of academic life. Bob was great company, warm and had a thirst for knowledge and for life. Bob was very clever and from runway over run modelling through to innovations to ease airport congestion, protect the surrounding environment, his work on steep aircraft approaches were ahead of its time….as was his call for the authorities to register drone users and control their usage to prevent conflicts with aircraft…..I sat and listened to Bob’s plans back in the late 1990’s…..proposals that it took several near misses with danger to life before the aviation authorities began to adopt Bob’s suggestions from around 2015 onwards.

Christian faith was important to Bob and living it out wherever he was, was a key thing for him.

Lord of all – thank you for Bob. Thank you for his love of aviation, his thirst for life, his love of friends, his marriage to Anna, his love of family and his faith in you. At this time of grief, fill our emptiness with your compassion, lift the burden that weighs so heavily upon us, and give us the peace and hope we need to carry on. We ask these things in the name of Jesus our savior and friend.

In Jesus name
Amen
