EAN EVANSEan Evans, who lost a battle with cancer on 6 May, 2009, was an American bass player best known for taking the place of one of his idols in a legendary band. When Leon Wilkeson died of natural causes in Florida in 2001, Evans took his place in Lynyrd Skynyrd for subsequent tours and a new album. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia and played guitar with local rock cover bands as a teenager. He switched to the bass so his group could accommodate another guitarist and, as well as Wilkeson, John Paul Jones, of Led Zeppelin, and Geddy Lee, of Rush, became his musical heroes.During the 1980s he formed the band Cupid’s Arrow in Atlanta before being invited to join long-running Southern rock outfit Outlaws. Guitarist Hughie Thomasson became the first Outlaw to join Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1996 and Evans formed another new band, Noon.Ean Evans first played with Lynyrd Skynyrd in Las Vegas in August 2001, two months after Wilkeson’s death. He played on the album Vicious Cycle (2003) and toured with the band until he was diagnosed with cancer in late 2008.
