DavidEDGAR-KOBUSEulogy for Dave (Edgar-Kobus) who died on April 4th, and has had his funeral! by Lynn (Armfield), Pete, Paul and Carol, his forever family Lynn's words.. My first recollection of dear Dave, was when I was just 6 years old, that's over 65 years ago. My Daddy brought the handsome, blond young man in for tea, to our London flat, behind the Kensington Police Station, where Dave had passed exams, after leaving the army, to take on 25 years as a Metropolitan Policeman. From that day forward, Dave became a real live member of our FULL family, through and beyond his retirement, to his now, sad passing! He followed us around the country, to ensure close proximity to us when we moved! Participating in all our family activities, so he was my 'big brother'! When away from each other we all chatted constantly on the telephone! Years and years, until he lost that ability. Earlier in Dave's life, (before he became the young 'rooky' policeman,) (1947-52ish) he spent some years serving in the army, during which time he was out in Malaya, to and fro on the Empire Windrush Ship, of which he spoke often and recollected with affection. His dear old Dad and Mum, were so very proud of their son Dave, and he was very proud to be the first 'armed' officer at Heathrow airport. Sadly, the only lady Dave fell in love with, then marry, was a German, and after causing him to change his name, she then broke his heart, by leaving him and also left with his precious dog too! His heart broke and never ever did he trust another woman! She broke his heart forever! So Dave's love was always to very precious animals, cats especially, whom he devoted his full time and life to, ALWAYS! It was a standing family joke that Dave's cupboards always had cat food but not necessarily 'Dave' food! So his intention from as long back as I and the rest of our family can recall, was to help cats and dogs! Dave joined in with all our life, EVERYTHING, he became part of all we did, and often that included 'Landrover trialling' when Dave riding as passenger to my Dad, Gerry who skilfully enjoyed horrendous mud slipping and hill climbing, then Dave would shout to spectator's and make them laugh! Hence became his love of Landrovers, and he bought one! Dave's move to Cornwall, from us in Gloucestershire, saw us having holidays in the area, to delight in his life anew, we all visited regularly, and myself and dear (both now passed) Mum Ruth, and Dad Gerry, continued to share life and time with Dave. Landrovers altogether! Until they became too old to travel, but we ALL still chatted on the phone. Dave was a real joker and funny, always amusing us all, and had a joke to answer everything. Loved playing to any crowds, in our company. I have wonderful memories, laughing so much, he would 'play' the spoons, (not!), and sing 'yellow Rose of Texas' with my Dad, it became a standing joke that she (yellow rose) was a better bet than women, for they broke his heart and so it helped him thro! Hence the yellow rose, his substitute lady! Latterly, his singular life, with only his faithful cats remained his complete life, his love devoted to his furry friends! Dear Dave, my big brother so full of love, and caring, we miss you. Norman's words (Lynn's husband) Dear Dave, a very sad day today, as we will miss you more than you ever thought we would. We, the ones who called you our friend, are the ones who hold you dear. And when you've gone to the other land, that seems so far away, we will meet up again one day, and talk about passed times. But meanwhile we'll take you to 'Lands' End', and scatter your Ashes, as you always wanted us to do. And so from us all, your long life family, Good-bye Dave, dear friend, we'll miss you, until we meet again Neighbours tributes.. 'The' David who loved all animals and always greeted dogs with 'Hello BOY!' regardlessly! And how he always remembered a dear neighbour was a nurse and would trot down to her if he'd fallen or cut himself. She will always remember David, and his tremendous sense of humour. Also he had a friend Arthur who travelled with him every day on the bus, and a lady called Edna also used to chat to him, both passed now unfortunately, but he was such a well-known figure locally. So I write this for you all, wanting you to know how for over 65 years I loved Dave, my 'Big brother' with all my heart!
