A very very dear friend since 1956. We were classmates in Glasgow University Medical School from 1956 to 1962 and the House Officers in Stobhill General Hospital. He was endowed with the rare gift of changing freezing winter into invigorating summer. Jim and Sheena spent a few memorable days with us in Peshawar, Pakistan in mid-1980s His wit and Sheena's would make the gloomiest person the happiest one. My love for Jim, Sheena and the girls will never diminish.

So sad on the passing of Professor Elder, as a former patient I remember his kindness and concern. He was a true gentleman. He allayed my fears and I will always remember him. Lynne Colclough
