George ErnestELLIS79, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2012, at Bantry Hospital in County Cork, Ireland following a brief illness. He leaves his daughter Tessa Dennison; his son, Simon Ellis; sister Florrie (Irene) Dalton; three grandchildren; and many close friends and relatives. Born and raised in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, the son of Herbert and Charlotte Ellis. In his early years, Mr. Ellis completed his national service in the Royal Air Force in the early 1950s and was an excellent all round sportsman, excelling in football, cricket and table tennis. He married Avril Violet Smith in 1955. In 1963 Mr. Ellis had opportunity to join the French West Africa Company in Lagos Nigeria as a sales manager. Thus began a fruitful career in West Africa culminating in his appointment as Chairman and Managing Director of National Cash Register (NCR) West Africa, based in Lagos, Nigeria. Mr. Ellis returned to England in 1984 and worked briefly for an export company in London before moving to Wells, Somerset in 1990 as the Wells Golf Club Secretary. Blending his business acumen with his love of golf and people he brought about substantial expansion and improvement of the Wells Golf Club. He retired from full time employment in 1996 but remained Wells Golf Club President until ill health forced retirement in 2010. Mr. Ellis lost his beloved wife, Avril, in 2008. He was much loved by his family and friends, he will be missed by all. Mr. Ellis was buried in Kenmare, Ireland on March 24th, 2012. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas?s Church in Wells on Monday April 2nd at 2 p.m. Following the service there will be a gathering at the Wells Golf Club. All are invited to attend.
