David JohnFIRTHWho died at his home in Chacewater on September 7th, aged 76 David was Senior Lecturer in Art History and Theory at Falmouth College of Art from 1988 - 1998, having gained his Master of Education in 1982. Previously he was Lecturer in Art and Related Studies at Cornwall College of Further and Higher Education, and between 1976 and 1983 had responsibility for Adult Art Education at Redruth School of Art. He was born a Yorkshireman, and trained as a painter at Harrogate School of Art, and continued as a practising artist into the1980s. He was an inspiring teacher, and loved to share his understanding of the international cultural and political context of art practice, and the importance of shared experience and rational thinking in our lives. Since retirement from teaching he served on the Board of Victim Support Cornwall, and volunteered for Oxfam, where he used his expert knowledge of Classical Vinyl recordings to help price music. He became a Chacewater Parish Councillor, was an active member of Cornwall Humanists and of The Green Party. A Humanist ceremony was held at Chacewater Village Hall on 18th September amid sunshine, dahlias and pasties. He will be incalculably missed by his friends and family: leaving behind his wife, Rosemary, daughters Christina and Janine, and son Sam.
