PegFRYIn Loving Memory FRY Peg Nee Durman On Monday 18th February 2019, the congregation of St Paul's Church, Preston, Paignton was full of people attending the funeral of Peg Fry, who died peacefully at home aged 95, in the care of Rowcroft's Hospice at Home Team. Peg as she liked to be known, was born Peggy Mary Durman on 12th February, 1923 at Enmore Castle near Bridgwater, Somerset. The family stayed there until later moving to a house on the estate. Peg's young life was a happy one and when she was old enough she was sent to the Girls' Grammar School in Bridgwater. This entailed a five mile cycle ride each way. Peg met her future husband, Ossie who was also cycling to Dr Morgan's School in Bridgwater; they cycled together. Ossie joined the Royal Air Force in 1941 to train as a navigator and in 1942 Peg joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force to become a Plotter at Group Headquarters in Plymouth and on occasions seconded to 19 Group Status. Ossie and Peg were married on 21st January, 1944, but Ossie was shot down on a return flight from a bombing raid on Germany on the 27th and was taken prisoner until war ended. When going on duty in dusty, bombed-out Plymouth, Peg sustained eye damage resulting in losing the sight in her left eye. After the war Ossie returned to his career in Accounting and Peg and he moved to Bridgwater. After the birth of their son Peter in 1947 and their daughter Nina in 1950 the family moved to Taunton. In 1968 they moved again, this time to Paignton, where Ossie took the position of Finance Director at Rossiters. Peg very much loved her garden, also flower arranging and fishing with Ossie. They travelled widely during their retirement. She was a member of The Paignton Club and U3A. And so ends a happy life. Peg leaves five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and her much loved Peter and Nina. A collection was taken for Hospice at Home and a reception held at The Paignton Club where she had enjoyed membership for over 50 years.
