Marion Louise BernadetteGABRIELProud Cambridge resident, mother, and grandmother, born Durban, South Africa 1931 and died in Cambridge 2019. The youngest daughter of Bernard Gabriel, the famous graduate of Downing College, Cambridge who was the First Indian criminal Barrister in South Africa, noted for working alongside Gandhi and serving with him during the Boer war of 1899. Wife of Sean Brady, she was widowed in 1990 but never remarried. She leaves behind a son Brian Grant and two grandchildren, David Brady and Robert Grant. She left South Africa, coming to Britain to escape Apartheid in 1960, arriving in England on the 1st January by ship on the Stirling Castle Line with her daughter Edwina and son Brian from her first marriage to Harrold Grant. She moved to Cambridge in 2002 to honour the memory of her late father and fast became a well-loved and respected resident and supporter of Cambridge University, providing temporary lodging to university students from all over the world, many of whom remain her friends to this day. She was much loved, made a huge impact in life and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A service in her memory will take place at Mill Road Baptist Church on Monday 29th April at 11.00.
