Tony and I were friends for 23 years, after I became a hereditary Freeman of the City. He knew my mum and her late sister when they were children, and it was lovely to continue that friendship. Tony was such a knowledgeable man, and his stories were legendary. I never tired of listening to him, as he knew so much history, plus a lot of his stories were very funny. My husband, Phil, and I would visit Tony and his late wife, Jo, at their home. He’d always ensure there were biscuits to go with a cup of tea. Phil became Jo’s singing partner at church services, as I was usually with Tony and other Freemen, and they had a mutual love of music.
I now live in Spain, and was so very pleased to have seen Tony several times during my recent visit back to Lincoln; once at his home and twice in hospital. I got to spend some quality time with him, and I will treasure that.
Goodbye our dear friend. We will miss you greatly.
