SheilaGANNICOTTIt is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our beloved auntie, Sheila, who passed away peacefully in her sleep on 27th April, at Pendennis Care Home, aged 89. She leaves behind her nieces Geraldine and Deborah, great-nephews Adam, Marcus and Ewan, great-nieces Sophie and Naomi, and great-great-niece Grace; as well as many other much loved family members and friends. Sheila, born in Paignton in 1932, grew up in Fisher Street with her parents, Hilda and Wilfred, and brother John. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic school, and was a member of the local theatre group and the Sea Cadets. After leaving school Sheila helped run the family's shop, Elmsliegh Stores, as well as being a barmaid at the Torbay Inn, and a scout leader. She married her beloved husband, Bob in 1973 following a 19 year engagement. The couple later left Fisher Street and moved to Hayes Road, where Sheila became the Warden of the Sheltered Accommodation complex there. The couple lived here happily together until Bob sadly passed away in 1985. Sheila filled her time caring for her residents, enjoying holidays and outings with family and friends, tending to her garden, and having an active role with St Johns Ambulance. Following her retirement Sheila remained at Hayes road, until deteriorating health meant she needed long term residential care. She moved to Pendennis Care home in 2021. Sheila will be remembered for her kindness and generosity, her love of children and animals, as well as her great sense of humour. A life spent caring for others, she truly had a heart of gold. She was loved by everyone who knew her, and will be missed more than words can say. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday 18th May, 2:30pm at the Coop Funeral Home Chapel, Dartmouth Road, Paignton. We would like people to wear something pink if possible (her favourite colour). As per Sheila's request it is family flowers only, with donations to the British Heart Foundation. There will not be a wake following the service, but the family will be gathering at the Inn on the Green afterwards and ask that you join them for a drink, and to share stories of this amazing lady. Rest in Peace Auntie Sheila, you will be forever in our hearts. Love you always. Geraldine, Deborah and family
