GARETH CARRIVICKTributes were paid to Gareth Carrivick, who died on 16 March, 2010, after battling leukaemia. He was 52.Born in Plymouth, Mr Carrivick was one of the leading directors of television comedy.He worked on such shows as The Vicar of Dibley, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, The Smoking Room and Beautiful People.Mr Carrivick was born in Stoke, Plymouth, on 16 November, 1957. His father worked as an electrical diagnostician on guns on the ships based in Devonport Dockyard.In 1958 the family moved to South Africa for three years and returned in 1961 to Woodford where Mr Carrivick mum Olwen still lives.He was survived by his wife Fiona and their three children - Jack, Jessica and Holly.He has a twin brother, Stewart, an older brother Nigel and a sister Diane.Diane said: “He was lovely, a really good brother. He did really well for himself.”Attending Plymouth Grammar School, Gareth became involved in youth theatre and took the community theatre arts course at Rose Bruford College, Sidcup in Kent.Working mainly as a performer but also writing, designing and making props and costumes, he spent several years with touring companies in the West Country and Scotland, an invaluable grounding for his later career in television.In the early 1980s Mr Carrivick moved to London and became involved in stage management in the West End.His productions included The Apple Cart with Peter O’Toole and shows with Topol, Lulu and Marti Webb. He worked on a London Palladium pantomime, Babes in the Wood, which starred Cannon & Ball, John Inman and Barbara Windsor.Mr Carrivick directed five series of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and helped with its conception.The last full series he directed was Beautiful People series one and he worked on pilots with Miranda Hart and the forthcoming Mrs Brown series, both commissioned on the back of his gifted eye, says his wife Fiona.“He was nominated for several BAFTA awards and won two, Alistair MacGowan and Vicar of Dibley.“From all the tributes I have been receiving he truly did Plymouth proud in his chosen career,” Fiona added.
