Peter CampbellGIBBSIt is with great sadness that the family of Peter announce he passed away peacefully, at the George Eliot Hospital on 2nd July 2023, at the age of 89 years. Peter was born in Bradford and qualified as a Solicitor in 1960 and spent his working life in Local Government. He was a former England International Chess Player competing around the world. He was a chess columnist for The Bradford Telegraph and Argus and later for the Birmingham Post. His chess achievements were acknowledged by the English Chess Federation awarding him the title of English Chess Master. For nearly 40 years, Peter played the children of Burbage Schools in an annual simultaneous chess display, as part of the Burbage Carnival celebrations. For several decades he trained blind chess players and accompanied them to tournaments all over the world and was a dedicated member of the Braille Chess Association. Peter was the beloved husband of Celia, loving father of Jonathan and Claire, and father-in-law of Camille and Ian. He was the proud Grandad of Holly, Lara, Lucy and Willow, not forgetting the late baby Chloe. The funeral service will take place at the Heart of England Crematorium, Nuneaton, on Friday 4th August at 12.30pm. No flowers please. So sorry to learn of Peter's passing. He was such a professional and such a pleasant man, always hugely helpful when I was trying to get my head around local govt finances for Mercury news stories, back in the day. RIP Peter and condolences to his family.
