SheilaGILL (PIKE) (Pike)Former Rossendale resident Mrs Sheila Ann Gill died peacefully in a Norfolk nursing home on 13 April, aged 93. Sheila was brought up in Jersey but fled to the south of England with her mother and sister just before the German invasion in 1940. She joined the Land Army near Winchester after leaving school and then took a course in cookery. Her wonderful pastry is remembered to this day! Sheila met her first husband, Bill Pike, in Blackpool. They moved to Crawshawbooth and then to Newchurch, bringing up six children. She worked as a cook at Rossendale General Hospital. Unfortunately, Bill died prematurely, aged 47, after a long illness. Sheila moved to Rawtenstall, where she joined the Townswomen's Guild and became a member of Kay Street Baptists. She married Raymond Gill in 1988 and went to live with him in Norfolk. Sheila was known for her welcoming smile and the kindest of hearts. She was much loved and leaves five children, Lesley, Helen, Bill, Martin and Sheila. Sadly, her son Geoff died in a tragic accident in 2002. She has 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Her funeral will be held in Cambridgeshire on Monday 27 April, followed later this year by a family celebration of her life, to take place in Rossendale.
