IreneGRAINGERMRS Irene Isobelle Grainger peacefully passed away at Royal Blackburn Hospital on Tuesday, December 8, aged 93. Widow of her beloved husband Burton, she was the loved and cherished friend of David, Lesley, John and Sophie, and long and trusted friends Glenys and Carly and those she taught and those lives she touched along the way in her own special and unique way. A keen piano player from the age of six, passing all her piano exams with distinction, Irene continued to play every day of her life. As a child she enjoyed walking with her family, especially in the Lake District while in her teenage years Irene would take part in local talent shows. It was at Irene’s first job, working at the town hall, where her boss recommended her for a scholarship at the Royal Manchester College, where she qualified to become a music teacher. She began teaching at a convent school in Blackpool and then at Paddock House, Oswaldtwistle, before taking private tutoring lessons, continuing way into her retirement due to her love of teaching. Irene was a keen Methodist, attending Cambridge Street Methodist Church, Accrington. She also learned and enjoyed playing the complex organ. After the loss of her husband Burton, Irene returned to her love of nature and walking, enjoying walking holidays and retreats in the Lake District. Irene loved to write letters, poems and prayers and was a kind, gentle, caring and sensitive lady with a pure heart and beautiful soul. In the last few years of her life Irene continued to live at home with her support bubble of David, Lesley, John and the Golden Girls. She would enjoy playing her Bechstein piano every day and reflect on the sound of silence and peace in her heart and tell her life stories with gratitude, love and affection. A special thank you to David, Lesley, Golden Girls ‘aka Earth’s Angels in Blue’, Lisa, Laura, Michelle, Claire and Wolstenholme Funeral Directors. And in the words of one of Irene’s letters to Lesley: “May the Lord bless you and keep you”. A funeral service for Irene will take place at 10.20am on Wednesday, December 30, at Accrington Crematorium. Funeral arrangements: Wolstenholmes.
