GREVILLE STARKEYJockey Greville Starkey, who rode nearly 2,000 winners on the flat in a 33-year career, died of cancer at the age of 70, on April 14, 2010.
Before his retirement at the end of the 1989 season, he had numerous high profile successes.
He won the Derby and Irish Derby on Shirley Heights, and the Oaks and Irish Oaks on Fair Salinia, a Classic double-double in 1978.
He'd also won the Oaks in 1964 on Homeward Bound, as well as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Star Appeal in 1965.
He triumphed twice in the 2,000 Guineas - on To-Agori-Mou in 1981 and Dancing Brave in 1986.
Starkey had been champion apprentice in 1957.
For many he will be best remembered for losing a race - the 1986 Derby on Dancing Brave. He was dogged for years after by accusations that he had held Dancing Brave up too long and given him too much to do at the end. Despite storming up the straight it was still not enough and he lost by half a length to Shahrastani.
