RayGRIFFITHSIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ray Griffiths, of West End, Oswaldtwistle.
Ray died peacefully in Blackburn Royal Hospital, following a short illness, on Friday, August 2, aged 83 years.
Ray was the dearly loved husband of the late Jean, beloved father of Gwen and Elaine, father-in-law of Andrew and Tony, and devoted grandad to Craig, Adam, Laura and Kieran, and great-grandad to Logan. Son of John James (Taffy) and Edna, Ray was their last surviving child, his siblings, Edna, Linda and Glyn sadly having passed before him.
Ray and Jean were married for 60 years before Jean passed away in September 2021, just days after they celebrated their anniversary. Ray attended Hyndburn Park School, then Rhyddings High School in Oswaldtwistle before starting work at 15 as a coal miner at Scaitcliffe Colliery in Accrington. Later Ray transferred to Hapton Valley Colliery, before finishing his working life at Agecroft Colliery in Salford. In his younger years Ray enjoyed cross-country running and football, he was also a member of Pioneer Working Men’s (‘Tanpits’) club in Church for many years. Ray was a devoted family man and loved nothing more than spending time with them at home playing cards and on family trips to South Shields, where he would sit on the caravan decking and watch the ships and ferries coming to and from the Port of Tyne. He will be missed greatly by friends and family. Ray’s funeral will be held at Immanuel Church Oswaldtwistle, at 1.30pm on Thursday, August 15, followed by interment at Dill Hall Cemetery. Flowers, or donations to East Lancs Hospice, would be gratefully received. Enquiries to Hyndburn Funeral Services.
