Dearly loved cousin, always known as Bommie. It's great to see the tributes from her teacher colleagues at Guildford – I can recognise that laugh they describe.
She rarely spoke about her past, but she came over to the UK in 1938, aged 12, with her parents. Of Jewish ancestry, they had to flee Germany. They were sponsored in this by my grandfather, and Barbara spent some of
her teenage years at his house In London, along with my slightly older mother and her siblings. The Gutkinds eventually settled in Guildford. Her father Walter, a distinguished judge in Germany, found work as a hospital porter in Guildford. None of them ever complained at their fate.
Barbara was a wonderful cousin, always helpful, always welcoming, always of service.
