GUY MASCOLOGaetano ‘Guy’ Mascolo, the Italian-born co-founder of one of hairdressing’s biggest brands died on 6 May, 2009, aged 65.
He and his brother Toni (Giuseppe) founded the first Toni & Guy salon in Clapham, London in 1963. The chain now has more than 400 branches around the world.
The brothers were from a family of hairdressers and Guy’s earliest memories included picking up pins in his father's salon at the age of three.
Mr Mascolo, who had lived in America since 1987, was also a lover of music and the arts and had set up his own recording studio in West Hollywood.
He died of a heart attack at his home in Dallas, prompting tributes throughout the hairdressing industry.
Another brother, Anthony Mascolo, said: “Guy wasn't just a great brother, he was also a wonderful friend. He was the most caring and giving person you could hope to meet and an absolutely fantastic dad.
“In the early days, when we first opened in Mayfair, Guy was the one would do endless clients all day long in the salon, whilst [brother] Bruno and I were off doing photo shoots. The clients loved him, he always had a wonderful way with people and he was a really good hairdresser too.”
British hair stylist Trevor Sorbie said: “I spent six months of my career at Toni & Guy when Guy was working at the Davies Street salon. He was a great hairdresser and he'll be a sad loss to the industry. Guy was instrumental in the success of the Toni & Guy empire.”
