John THALSHAWMr John Halshaw, 96, of Ashlands Nursing Home and formerly of Underbank House, Bacup, died peacefully at home on Wednesday 24th April. John was born in Stacksteads and lived in the Bacup area until moving to Clitheroe in the late 1960's. His wife, Grace, passed away in 1982 and John moved back to Bacup two years later, on his retirement. He enlisted in the RAF at age 18 and during WW2 served in the Indian Ocean area maintaining flying boats. Following his RAF service as a qualified aircraft fitter, John returned to civilian life as an engineer working around the UK and was also employed as Head Dyer during the 1960s and 1970s at Stalwart Dyeing Co. John's final job was at Castle Castings in Clitheroe. He retained his lifelong contact and involvement with the RAF and contributed to many published articles over the years including his own, recently published book "Lost Years ---WW2 Memoirs of John Halshaw", an excellent read. John also enjoyed classical music and was always good company with his vast knowledge of the Rossendale Valley and many of it's characters. Brother to the late Margaret, Elsie and Keith, John leaves sister-in-law Glennis and several nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.
