Steve HARLEY Cockney Rebel frontman Steve Harley has died after a short battle with cancer. Rock star Steve Harley has died at his Suffolk home on Sunday morning after a short battle with cancer at the age of 73.

The Cockney Rebel musician had still been touring, but was forced to put it on hold last month to have treatment. Writing to fans in February, his official social media page said: "Due to on-going treatment for cancer, Steve cannot commit to any concerts in 2024. Steve is hoping next year will be altogether different. He appreciates all you kind words and good wishes. Team SH."

Steve had a highly successful music career with his band Cockney Rebel, having a huge hit across Europe with Sebastian from their debut album with EMI in 1973, hitting the top spot in the Netherlands and Belgium. It was in 1975 that Steve made his name as Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) went to number one in the charts.

The song has hit a chord so much across the decades that it is often cited in votes for top singles in chart history and The Performing Rights Society have confirmed it as one of the most played records in British broadcasting, with it being covered more than 100 times and seven different languages. Steve's friend, Rod "one of the finest lyricists the UK has ever produced."

As well as topping the charts, Steve also met with critical acclaim when treading the boards on the West End and Broadway. He starred as 16th century playwright Christopher Marlowe, in the musical-drama Marlowe, with one reviewer saying he gave "a major and moving performance."

Steve also shared his sadness over Steve Wright's death in February, saying that it had "shattered" him and that they had known each other since the sixties.

Our thoughts are with Steve's family, friends and fans at this sad time. We invite you to pay tribute to Steve below.

The last time I saw you.... was exactly one year ago today.

Still feeling very sad, constantly listening to your music, keeping my memories of you alive.

You were the sound of my teenage years... you made me happy!

Rest in peace, beautiful man.

The last time I saw you.... was on 17th June 2023, I never knew it would be the last time ever.

I should have been seeing you tonight at Whitley Bay with my two daughters, who love you as much as I do having been brought up to the sound of your fantastic music and coming to your concerts with me. I'm so sad that we won't get to see you again.... we all cherish every moment of the time we have spent in your presence. singing along.... you made us all smile. The best years of our lives....

Sleep well, beautiful man.
